España Vacia – Tobias Canales – exhibition Arles

It’s April and the first heatwave of the year is upon us.

On the highlands, the temperature rises above 40°C in the afternoon, making the arid sun and scorching sand a hostile environment.

Despite the drought, a completely different kind of life exists, with sunshine and olive trees, although no one knows for how much longer.

Calm reigns and this false silence becomes unsettling.

I felt dizzy as soon as we approached the deserts. Without daring to say it out loud, I wondered what we were doing there. Why go where there’s nothing? Why wander through empty villages?

But I think it’s when all distractions cease that you find yourself. Alone with nature. Alone in the emptiness.

Photography here is a challenge, a challenge to be met.
